ARPAN INSTITUTE FOR MENTALLY HANDICAPPED CHILDREN
Arpan Institute for Mentally Handicapped Children (AIMHC), (started as a project of Indian Red Cross Society, Rohtak), in 1983 is an institute dedicated to the cause of children/ persons with Intellectual Disability by providing Education and Training including Early Intervention and Stimulation services, Education by use of Special Education techniques, Vocational Training, Parent Empowerment Programme ( Through Regular Education Programme, Parent Group Meetings, Parents & Family Involvement Programme and Parents Association), Diagnostic Clinic, Case- Conference Programme, Consultancy Services to other Centers/Institutions, Out Reach Programmes (Community Based Rehabilitation Programmes) and Manpower Development programmes through Degree & Diploma courses to develop trained manpower in the area of special education and rehabilitation.
Envisaged during the International Year for the Disabled (1981) and started on April 14th, 1983, the Institute has grown from its infancy and is extending services to developmentally disabled and minimal brain damaged persons without any distinction of caste and creed.
The Institute was started as a small bud in the form of a cottage/ home over 700sq. yards of land with 10 children to provide them care facilities under home like environment. Arpan Institute has grown as the best Institute in Northern India and one amongst the best few in the country. Since 1983, Arpan Institute has steadly made progress and earned a quality name and distinction for itself in the field of rehabilitation services. The Institute, at present, has got three cottages/home for 30 children, one rehabilitation wing building, a play ground & green lawns spread over an area of three acre of land. At present 134 Special need children are on roll who are being training by sixteen special educators, a team of rehabilitation expert comprising of physiotherapist, speech therapist, psychologist and social worker and other supportive staff. The Institute has got all essential; facilities like Physio & Occupational Therapy Department, Psychology Lab, Speech Therapy Lab, Computer wing, Music and Dance Unit, Art & Craft Unit, Vocational Unit, Library, Resource room etc. for meeting the needs and requirements of all the students.
Our Mission :
- To provide educational and vocational training to nurture the abilities and to further help them to achieve self-independence as far as possible.
- To educate parents, make them sensitive to their children’s needs, involve them as co-therapist and to make them self-reliant
- To reach the unreached by providing skill training to parents under Home-Training Programme.
- To provide Early Stimulation Training to children in the age group of 0-3 yrs. to aid in their speedy development.
- To extend services to the community domiciallary by opening Rural Community Centers under Community Based Rehabilitation Programme.
- To extend assistance/ help to other NGO’s by extending consultancy services for establishment and running of Special Schools/ Centres/ Institutions for children with mental retardation.
- To develop manpower for specialised services to special children and to organize short term courses or update the skills & knowledge of professionals working in the field.
- To conduct research in the field of mental retardation to develop new models of training
